Trees, palms and hedges

The landscape is often what makes a house feel finished at night. A wrapped oak or a row of lit palms carries the lighting beyond the roofline and out to the street.

Tree work is detail work. We wrap trunks and limbs by hand with commercial-grade mini lights, keeping the spacing tight and the wire close to the bark, so the tree reads as a lit form rather than a tangle. In Los Angeles that often means palms, and a tall palm trunk wrapped in light is one of the most striking things you can put in front of a house.

For hedges and shrubs, light nets give even coverage quickly, and trunk nets do the same for straight trunks and columns.

How we install it

  • Wrapped by hand at a consistent spacing, with the wire kept tight to the bark.
  • Tall palms and large trees are scoped at the walkthrough, so we arrive with the right reach and the right amount of material.
  • Everything comes down in January, and the trees are left as we found them.

Questions

Should we wrap the tree or light the canopy?
Wrapping traces the trunk and limbs and shows off the shape of the tree. Lighting the canopy gives a softer, starrier look. Many trees look best with both: a wrapped trunk and a lit canopy.
Can we light trees without lighting the house?
Yes. Trees, palms and hedges can be a project on their own, or paired with rooflines.
